A wide variety of disorders may give rise to profound
hypotonia with reduced spontaneous motility.
After such common causes are anoxic/ischemic
encephalopathies, infections encephalopathies, chromosomal disorders, transient
hypoglycemia and other obvious conditions have been excluded, a hereditary
disorder should be suspected.
In some patients, visceral,
ocular abnormalities and routine laboratory results (hyperammonemia, lactic
acidosis, ketoacidosis, non ketotic hypoglycemia...) strongly suggest a hereditary
metabolic disease. In another context, the following clinical clues are of
great diagnostic help...

Perspectives d’avenir et souvenirs

 En me demandant un texte pour contribuer à la célébration de ce trentième
anniversaire, vous avez suggéré des souvenirs et des perspectives. Pourquoi et
comment êtes-vous devenu neuropédiatre et cofondateur de l’ABNP – BVKN ?
Quelle est la petite histoire des débuts des structures nationales de la
neuropédiatrie belge ? Quelles est votre vision des perspectives d’une
société telle que l’ABNP – BVKN ? Tout cela relève de genres littéraires
particulièrement difficiles. Dans ces quelques lignes, je ne ferai qu’apporter
quelques « miettes et glanures » qui pourraient contribuer à un texte
que Gilles Lyon, Henri Szliwowski, Paul Casaer, d’autres et moi-même pourrions
écrire ensemble sur la neuropédiatrie belge des origines à l’an 2000 … si nous
en avons un jour le temps. Inversant l’ordre chronologique, je commencerai par
le futur avant de parler du passé...

A clinician, researcher and teacher, Philippe Evrard (1) is one of
Europe\\\'s pioneer paediatric neurologists. For the past three decades he
has been investigating the structure of the brain, the factors which
could distort its development in the womb, the neurological handicaps
which affect very premature babies and possible forms of preventive or
curative treatment.
THERE was a group of us who used to skip as many
lectures as we could so that we could spend all our time in the
laboratory, where we also spent a large part of our weekends and
holidays. I was lucky in that in my second year at university I was
granted the status of student-researcher, which existed in Belgium at
the time.\\\' Philippe Evrard got off to an early start, and under
favourable auspices. After coming to the attention of Pierre Baudhuin
and Christian de Duve, the future Nobel prizewinner, he worked for
several years in their cellular biology unit while pursuing his medical
studies at the University of Louvain. He then went on to set up his own
clinic in paediatric neurology. That was in 1969, at the age of just
